Brazil Super Power

I just finished readings the Sunday newspaper here in Brazil and the press it up in arms. The last first four months of 2013, the Brazilian economy grew at .6%, and the American economy grew at 2.5%. On top of that, in the last month, the Brazilian real has lost 15% of its value against the American dollar. Everyone is calling for quick action due to the poor economic results. They are all dead wrong.

The key issue is that they are trying to compare Brazil to the United States. In my view, the United States, and in particular Ben Bernanke, has done everything wrong in order to manage a strong and prosperous economy. At this point, the United States economy is based on cheap money that creates a bonanza in the financial sector which creates a lot of faux milllionaires but does nothing to create jobs or improve the overall economy. On top of that this strategy creates a very unstable banking sector requiring massive government bail outs. So if Brazil is to be successful, they need to avoid doing what the United has done.

Up to this point, they have been very successful, because the Central Bank has decided to increases interest rates .5% from 7.5% o 8.0%. Imagine that, a country raised their interest rates and this is perhaps the #1 reason why Brazilian is on the right path. They are one of the few countries in the world which still have the ability or strength to raise interest rates. Compare that with the United States, the banks so control the country, that even if the Fed hinted at raising interest rates, the banks and Wall Street would batter the stock market. As we know, the US and Japan are both stuck at 0% interest rates for the foreseeable future. I will Brazil will resist falling in this economic trap and therefore will become more productive than both Japan and the US.

On top of that, Brazil measure inflation correctly The inflation index includes key costs such as health care costs, energy and food costs. That’s right. About 40 years ago, in America, we measured inflation to include all of the key things that people purchase, but in order to avoid “inflation”, our wonderful government decided to exclude key things that people need to survive such as energy and food costs. Again, America is NOT the benchmark and Brazilian can and will be successful if they avoid the tragic error of excluding key costs from the inflation index.

Brazil’s infrastructure severely lags that of Europe, China, Japan and the United States. This is in all senses a good thing. First and foremost, Brazil can and will upgrade their infrastructure and it will create a stimulus to the economy. The Brazilian government is doing the upgrade slowly so as not to overheat the economy and create inflation. It is a huge upside that no other country has at its disposal. China has gone about the infrastructure issue in the exact opposite way. In the short space of 10 years, their infrastructure is now world class.

There is another huge upside which Brazil has yet to explore. Brazil’s key exports are still agricultural in nature. Brazil can and wiil make the transition to move the agricultural work force to production jobs in factories much the same as China. It is another huge upside and they are just in the beginning now that there is a small iPad factory just north of São Paulo.

I moved to Brazil 10 years ago, and believe it or not, interest rates were roughly 24% per year or roughly 2% per month. The dollar was also incredibly strong at 3 reais to the dollar. That’s when I bought my apartment it was the shrewdest investment I have made in my life. Since that time, interest rates have fallen from 24% to 8%, but by raising interest rates, Brazil has proven two things.

1. In the face of inflation, Brazilian did NOT change the way inflationn was measured.

2. Brazil has the ability to rasie interest rates which few nations in the world still have the capacity to do because the Brailian government still controls their banks as opposed to the other way around. If they can avoid the pundits, they can avoid the raise to zero and become of the strongest nations on earth.

Rio de Janeiro HDR Photos

My room mate from college freshman year in college came to visit me in Rio de Janeiro. I took a few days off and we went to all the typical Rio tourist traps and took a lot of photos. I am doing HDR photography which is using an auto exposure bracket for +/- 2 exposure values. Then I put it all in Photo Matix. Still not perfect but I found some of the photos interesting.

The Problems with Opposing Roe Vs Wade

Before I begin this post, I want to state that I believe that life begins at conception. As the father of two children, I can say that a lot of the child’s personality is already formed in the womb, and you can hear a heart beat at very early stages of a woman’s pregnancy. Despite all of that, I have decided that it is a waste of time to decide the governance of our country based on this issue. My opinion has nothing to do with a woman’s right to choose. After all I am not a woman. I do believe that if terminating a pregnancy is illegal, there would be less of them. But again, I am don’t think there should be an effort to make it illegal. Here is my reasoning.

First there is the reason that it may just not be possible in the USA to overturn Rowe versus Wade. Just because we disagree with a law does not mean it should be overturned. There are lots and lots of American laws that effect me more directly than Rowe vs Wade. But I don’t spend any time trying to over turn those laws either. I hear from my ultra conservative plan is that we should elect conservative politicians and then they will elect conservative justices and then somehow there will be a critical mass of conservatism and Rowe vs Wade will be overturned. It has been 40 years since Rowe vs Wade and nothing close to this has happened and I bet it never will. Read More

  1. Hey Rob,

I’m a new visitor to your blog, since I’ve been seeing so much of you on TV lately. I agree with you on almost everything you say…but on this issue, I’d call you half-right.

To be sure, our collective energies would be better spent on any number of things besides waging a crusade to overturn Roe v Wade. You’re right about that. We would also agree on the likelihood of the ruling being overturned, as well as the implausibility of enforcing a complete moratorium on elective abortion,.

But another question remains: do we, through our discourse, condone the act of elective abortion, or do we condemn it? Let’s suppose the GOP were to renounce its position on the issue. As it is, the Bush/Bernanke/Obama/Geithner cabal is barely distinguishable as it is on the other major issues. There would be an exodus of people from the GOP if some people lost one of their last reasons to support the party, which is because at least the GOP still stands up to the many egregiously and unapologetically pro-abortion elements in the Democratic Party.

That’s my two cents. As for the other 95 percent of what you say, agreed

    Best,
    rob

    1. Thanks for visiting my blog. I think there are two points behind this blog.
      1. Opposing Roe vs Wade is simply infeasible because the entire world and the systems are based on date of birth and changing this date of inception is not possible.
      2. We as a nation have become divided because of this issue and others like it. We as a country need to unite around issues that concern the majority.

It’s the Trade Deficit, Stupid

It’s been four years since the greatest economic melt down since the great depression. The underlying reason behind this depression is the economic structure of American and European banks. In addition to that, there is a more insidious problem with the American economy – the trade deficit.

America is perhaps the greatest nation in the history of civilization because it had the largest sustained trade surplus in the history of time. Starting in the early 1900’s, American products and innovation led the entire world and the many American inventions, products and companies made the world as we know it today. Included in this list is the light bulb, the radio, the television, the car, the airplane, and of course the computer. These were American products that were designed and manufactured in the United States. These products were also exported throughout the world.

We ran a hug trade surplus that drove the highest standard living in the entire world. It is the trade surplus that creates true jobs and sustains the economy. When a country has a trade surplus, then all the other related jobs such as policemen, barbers, stock brokers, accountants and everything other category rises naturally. The trade surplus is the tide that lifts all boats.

Go back to my favorite trade surplus item, computers. At Gateway, where I worked in the 1990’s, all of our computers were made in the United States, and more importantly the products were sold and supported via telephone all by people that resided in the United States. Since that time, the manufacture of the computers have moved to China, and the support has moved to India. That is a ton of jobs to lose in such a short time. It is this exodus of jobs that is creating our current trade deficit, and at the core of our economic demise.

It is too late to move all of those jobs back to the United States, although I do think that there should be a tax penalty to companies that ship telephone support jobs off shore. However we must recognize the core problem before we can fix it. We need to begin again creating and building products that the entire world wants.

Of course the problem is worse than that. For some insane reason, almost everything that Americans purchase is no longer made in the United States. Simple things such as a cutting board, clothes and nails are no longer made in the US. Big items such as lawn mowers, washing machines, and so on are all made in foreign countries.

I bought a new guitar a few months ago and it made me sad to see that the guitar was made in China. It is a nice guitar but Americans once made great guitars. Since we no longer produce very much any more, we are quickly losing all of our blue color jobs which is essential to our economy and the American dream. BTW. The American dream is not and should never be to own a house. The American dream is that we can create a better future for our children.

Even back in the 1990’s, the US was running a surplus and then in a scan 10 years, we went from trade surpluses to huge deficits. In order to get our country back on track, we need a plan. Here is my plan.

1. Call centers. A lot of the call centers that dotted the country are now gone and been moved to India. There should be a tax penalty to companies that out source the call center jobs to India, Phillipines and other places. Personally, I hate talking to people in other countries to solve matters in my own country. Some times it is laughable how bad their English is.

2. Tourism. The government should promote foreigners to visit our country as tourists. America is still today the most difficult country to visit in the world. We need to make it easier and more affordable for all these people to visit. The beautiful thing about tourism is something that Wall Street can’t export to China. We need to get a lot better at being nice to tourists and perhaps even learning foreign languages. There is a certain arrogance in America because we have once been the greatest country in the world that foreigners are somehow inferior to us. They are not.

3. Bring the troops home. Here’s a great way to fix the trade balance. Bring all the troops home. They spend all of their salaries in foreign lands creating economic stimulus to Japan, the Phillipines, Germany and the other hundred places where we have bases. Let’s bring them all home and create new bases throughout the Unite States. Tons of domestic problems will miraculously go away like border and school security and then on top of that our military will spend all of their salaries inside of their own country. Time to end the stupidity of the cold war.

4. The Walmart Tax. My opinion is that a very key element of Walmart’s strategy is to prefer companies that manufacture outside of the US and in particular in China. Walmart should pay a penalty for all these goods. Sorry, but they should not be able to base a business and become the nation’s largest retailers on killing jobs. Walmart is like a leech on the economy.

It was during the Clinton election of 1996, when they said “It’s the economy, stupid”. This more true than ever but now the economy has become significant worse, it is more than ever the trade deficit, stupid.
